After a five year hiatus the Seaside Super Hein has made a comeback! In years past, the Super Hein has been an overwhelming success and this year was no different. The City of Seaside did their usual bang-up job of providing everything we need, except the jammers. Fortunately, all of you answer the call whenever we hold this thing. Thanks to the City of Seaside and all of the competitors!

As people were arriving on Thursday and Friday, they were greeted by hearing radio ads and an electronic billboard that announced the Super Hein event. We had no idea just how much promotion we were going to get this year. It was very cool being the central event of the weekend in Seaside. Competitors arriving early were able to get the feel of the best beach on Earth before having to get as Hein as they could under the pressure of competition. The rumor I’ve heard is there was an epic night jam on Thursday out on the lit portion of the beach that included the likes of Jake Gauthier, Ofek Agmon, Ryan Young, Irena Kulisanova, and Daniel O’Neill just to name a few .

Those who spent the night in Seaside on Thursday woke-up to a light drizzle in the morning that stopped later in the day allowing for some heinous jamming in the afternoon. The temperature was cool and the breeze was about 5 Mph (8 Kph for those of you keeping metric score)

Friday night hosted the arrival/registration dinner where people registered for the Super Hein, ate Mexican food, and drank pitchers of Margaritas. Of notable mention is Flo had his first “American” beer that night. I can’t say for sure but I think that he’s going to be sticking with the German Weiss beers ;-).

The Super Hein began the next morning with beautiful wind and cool temperatures. Normally this time of year we would have perfect wind, sun and warmth but this year has been an odd one and we had great wind, but the cool temperature could be a bit to contend with if you were just sitting around. That being said the wind (9 Mph; 14.4 Kph) allowed for some stellar play from all competitors. It was double and triple spins for everyone. I think there were even a few quads. We’ll have to wait for the video to confirm.

Saturday night was dinner at the seafood joint. We took this place over. It was Awesome. We walked in the front door to see a poster advertising the Seaside Super Hein, and when we talked with the hostess she already knew who we were. Apparently we had already made a reputation for ourselves around town. We were welcomed in with open arms and able to party like only freestylers can. After dinner there was a round of bumper cars and air hockey at the Arcade down the street. Although we found it tough to convince some people to ride, once convinced they had a blast colliding into others at ramming speed!

Finals gave us a respite from the cool temperatures but also from the stronger wind. Sunday dialed up 67 degrees (19.4 C) and 5 Mph. The pairs finals were hot, probably the hottest in Super Hein history. All 8 pairs brought their A game.

The Turboshred had some Hein-o moves, but others struggled with the lighter wind. It appeared that some people may have been playing the previous day’s wind instead of what was in front of them in the moment. Arthur Coddington won Turboshred with move that finished with a quad spinning crow, but prior to that he hit what I thought to be the most nuanced move of the tournament. Arthur set up a nail guide and guided for a couple of steps and pushed the disc out in front of him, he spun and got the disc back on a nail guide with his arm outstretched. He did not have to break stride or move his arm at all - the disc was just there waiting for him to return in exactly the correct position.

The mob-op finals were their normal experiment in progress. I think we get closer every year to getting this one right. We used a modified version of Jam Idol and made the finals out of the top 4 idols (as written by all the competitors). It was pretty awesome! Ryan Young and Sascha Scherzinger both pulled off the unexpected and made the finals, joining Jake Gauthier and Randy Silvey for an 8 minute jam down. At first, their chemistry was not connecting, but clearly they figured things out as the last 4 minutes were full of flow, sweet sets, and catches worthy of an exciting mob-op four-some jamming at the beach.

Sunday night was the Pizza party. Pizza was paid for by the tournament and awards were given out. This year we had a new award, the Jam Buddy. Whoever jammed with the most people, competitors or not, won… that person was Dave Murphy.

The thrower award went to Dave Murphy too – since Dave was asked to be a thrower for more competitors during Turbo Shred.

The Super Hein nails went to Randy Silvey who was once again crowned “The Super Hein”, barely edging out Jake Gauthier, Matt Gauthier, and Dave Murphy in overall points.

More importantly, Hein Fun was had by all at the Super Hein.

Thanks cannot be overstated to the City of Seaside. The city is always supportive, helpful, and encouraging. The tournament would be nothing like it is without the city’s help. Thanks to the competitors and all of our sponsors (Odwalla, 5 Ultimate, and Lone Eagle Digital). We had close to 50 competitors and quite possibly the most successful Super Hein ever!!
